You’re Not Crazy—You’re Hormonal

A woman’s body is different from a man’s body. We know this, but often the differences, and how to manage them is not something we are taught until we are in a season of change (maternity, menopause, etc.). Women’s bodies are a carefully crafted orchestra of unseen processes, and the hormones are the instruments playing our unique songs.

The phases of the menstrual cycle are dictated by hormones and our hormones impact our brain chemistry, which in turn, influences our emotions, our energy levels, our metabolism, and basically every other bodily process (including blood pressure and insulin resistance).

What this means is that there is a certain time of the month when it’s easier for you to be creative, problem solve, and work hard. And there’s a time of the month when you want to rest and nest—because you actually NEED to do it. There’s a time of the month when you are more irritable because you are more SENSITIVE (meaning you hear better, smell better, see better, feel the most subtle things LOUDLY) because you are designed to be in tune with the spiritual world in that way.

So, why are we taught the menstrual cycle as if it is only a physical process, when our lived experiences tell us it is an emotional, spiritual, mental, AND physical process?

Many women are made to feel these natural rhythms are a problem, because they are a problem when you try to fit into a world designed by and for the male body. A world that is constantly in motion, constantly demanding 100% of your power and attention, a world that tells us we can sleep when we die.

Here at the Womb Keepers, when we talk about women taking their power back, we are talking about knowing our natural rhythms so we can create lives where we honor our ebbs and flows and use this knowledge of them to generate more health, wealth (because you work smart, not hard!), and harmony in our relationships.

Here’s a replay of our town hall from earlier this year, where we talk about the importance of this body of knowledge and why we offer workshops on it for women of all ages and stages, beginning with girls having their first period!

Welcoming In Journal Preview

Speaking of our youngest Womb Keepers, we want to share a preview of our newest book and journal with you! Here’s a sneak peek at pages 4-5.

Cycle awareness for young girls looks like learning how to take care of yourself in each phase.

  • For $30 you have entry to the class and the moms-only call.

  • For $45 you get all of the above, plus the journal, which includes most of the information covered in class and 6 months of journal pages.

  • For $60, you will receive all of the above, plus a mini-first period kit for your daughter(s) to use on the go.

Prices are per daughter (no limit on the number of adults), and we offer a multi-daughter discount!

In the News This Week: Venus Williams

This week, Venus Williams has been in the news advocating and sharing her journey with healing uterine fibroids. Like many things related to women and their wombs, doctors simply told Ms. Williams that her painful periods were normal and part of being a woman.

What those doctors would never admit to Williams, and many women like her, is the truth—they don’t know enough about women’s bodies to offer any sound advice.

While things are changing, let’s be clear that the science is new. Women’s health is under-researched. Women and Black people were not included in clinical trials (the science that determines treatment) until the 1990s. Many of the pressing questions about women’s bodies and holistic health (which we are passionate about over here!) are not being asked or fully studied, even today.

So when someone tells you “there’s no evidence to prove” ask them what that means. Has the question been studied and has the question answered? Have any studies been done at all? The answer is often (more often than you’d think, often enough to keep you up at night, often enough to spin you into a feminine fueled rage):

“No, no studies are being done at all. Or the ones we have are small and not very good.”

—A pro-tip for self-advocacy in the healthcare space

We salute Venus Williams for sharing her story and we are delighted to see her doctor partners with The White Dress Project (which is a good place to start doing some research, hearing other women’s stories, and supporting advocacy for Black women in womb health).

We pray for our sisters on the path to healing their wombs whether you choose conventional medicine or a holistic path, we are here to support you.

May we all be blessed with the empowered wisdom and exuberant joy gifted to us by God’s creation of our womanly bodies.

Our prayer for the women of the world.
